Material Opposition

Assessment 4  Week 4

A group project of pairs, the brief was to bring in large amounts of any material, either hard or soft, I brought in hard stainless steel boat fittings and my partner brought in soft string. We were paired together on the day with no previous time to plan or co-ordinate.
This task was given 90min to complete.
The construction or making process was largely improvised, each of us adding aspects we thought worthwhile.

Reflection

Our final artwork used a vice to support the structure of stainless steel boat parts and string.
My project partner, Rom, had pre-existing experience with crochet, we decided to use this to enhance the string elements of the artwork. Because of the versatile and intricate nature of my hard material it demanded a lot of attention from the viewer, this threatened to drown out the string component of the composition. The crochet section of string which is stretched across the central area of the structure allowed for the string to be a major focus of the artwork, balancing the two materials.

Working on an improvised artwork with a partner was very interesting as we navigated how to use both of our materials to their full potential. We both experimented with each others material as well as our own to collaboratively create the final product within the 90 min timeframe.
