3hr Artwork
Assignment 1 – Week 1
A Pike Eel carved from a block of pine wood
Time is displayed through the linear creation of the eel, I started at the nose and carved my way down the body for 3 hrs.

Reflection
During the making of this artwork I inhaled a considerable amount of wood dust from the sanding process, I am highly concerned by this because I have since researched the effects of wood particles in a humans lungs and it’s not good. In future projects I will be considerably more attentive to safety precautions such as a heavy duty filtering mask and a workspace with quality air ventilation.
After class consultation:
To progress this artwork I could further connect it to the Maiwar by lengthening the eel and shaping it like Maiwar, a 5m or so long wooden eel in the shape of the Brisbane river.

Reflection on time constraint:
The three hour time constraint was a very interesting factor to consider when forming an idea for the artwork, I considered what artwork that was dictated by time should look like, how the progression of time would be evident in my final product.
My decision to carve an eel meant that I could make the eel as long or short as needed in the 3 hours, carving mindlessly. With one minute to go I sawed the excess wood off and was left with an eel 32cm long.
